Guest adrian_h Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 Hi all, my first time to this forum, i recently purchased said galaxy 2.8 ghia on a 'y' plate a couple of months ago, however since buying it i have had a few niggles, firstly, the speedo has not worked properly the needle judders and sticks at around 40mph, secondly, when using the climate control an exhaust fume type smell enters the car. I've also had a slight problem with the gearbox whereas it doesn't change smoothly but i think this might be something to do with the 'esp'.....other than these things, i love the car, it flies more like a sports car and even the mpg isn't that bad - mid twenties around town and early thirties on a run. anyhoo, sorry for the essay but it is my first time and i would appreciate any assistance on offer many thanks ade Quote

Guest gooner52 Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 hi and welcome from me also as nik says put your car details in your signature any other problems with the clocks other than the speedo. as for the smell, might be fumes from your booster,as i get this a bit try putting the cc unit on recirculated air also look up under the dash drivers sidethere is a rubber gromit that goes to the engine bay,see if its still there,or has not come lose :( Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 No Booster on a V6 though! yea sorry about that only on the diesels silly me :( :( also see sig on your alloys, there is a couple of sets going on ebay Quote
Andrew T Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 also see sig on your alloys, there is a couple of sets going on ebay Cheers for that, but replacing the Alloys is a very low priority with crimbo coming. Quote

El Dingo Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 when using the climate control an exhaust fume type smell enters the car. Could be compressor about to fail and loading up the belt... Does this smell also resemble burnt rubber? Quote

Could be compressor about to fail and loading up the belt... Does this smell also resemble burnt rubber? hi again, thanks to you all....my speedo is mainly the only problem on the dash, all else works fine, the smell is definately exhaust type smell..didnt know if it was the rear blower unit sucking in fumes but it really smells more at the front.. thanks again ade Quote

It's in the FAQ.http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...304entry64304 Quote
Vanbursta Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 If you use climate control set to auto it will always put some air to the screen, if you manually select heat to your feet you will still get some to the screen although not as much, if you try recirculating air does the smell stop? It can only leak exhaust fumes in the front of the cabin if there is a leak in the exhaust system somewhere, or there is a problem with the pipes that connect the EGR valve, best to just do a quick visual check to look for any obvious leaks, as exhaust fumes are poisonous and can make you very sleepy, very dangerous on a long journey. As for the speedo, it's electronic. A quick test would be to remove the speedo unit and gently tip it to the left side, the needles should rise and fall back smoothly as you tip back to horizontal, if they do it could be the VSS (speed sensor) located on the gearbox giving a sporadic reading, or a problem with the cabling in between, (if the car is an auto it could also be the TCM - transmission control module),if the needles stick it's almost certainly the speedo unit, if you search for a second hand one make sure it comes from an identical spec car or it won't work properly, you will have to take it to Fords to have the correct mileage set and to reprogram it to your car in all likeleyhood. As you are also having gearbox problems I would suggest the fault with the speedo could be linked, the speedo and the TCM take a common signal from the VSS unit. I would check the relevant connectors are on tightly first and then start looking into more serious problems. Quote

Hi, thanks, took out dash (was a doddle wen you know how) found out that the backing card wasn't fitted correctly and rubbing on the needle. Works a treat now! just realised how much faster i've been driving without it working, just waiting for the speeding fines to come rolling in!! thanks all.....couldn't have done it without you Ade Quote
